Select students could earn a Motorola internship
DETROIT, MI. – March 27, 2006 – The Armada Area Schools’ Macomb Academy of Arts
and Sciences (MA2S) and Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) announced today
that they will introduce an innovative new program to local high school
students during the 2006 fall semester. The program, called Partnership for
Building Bridges and Futures, will engage eleventh and twelfth grade students
in exploring how they could use next generation wireless technology to share
music, programming, messages, images, e-mails, news or information with
friends, families and co-workers in real time - anywhere, anytime, via any
device or technology.
“Today’s youth are really defining the future of mobility,” said Fred Ettinger,
manager of University Relations for Motorola. ”Motorola is working with MA2S
to promote education; but more importantly, to help inspire our next generation
of innovators.”
“MA2S believes the Building Bridges and Futures Program will provide
students with real-world experience in applied science,” said Dr. Arnold A.
Kummerow, superintendent of Armada Area Schools. “Students could participate in
conceptual studies, market research, testing, writing software code—whatever
the school and company feel is the best fit for both parties. The curriculum
will be designed to excite and inspire students around potential future careers
in business, technology and engineering.”
Students will put their analytic and research skills to the test as they work
with Motorola designers, engineers and business teams to provide their unique
perspective on next generation technology trends and products, geared towards
the youth market. Motorola will work with MA2S students to research
content and personalization technologies that will create mobile entertainment
and media experiences that are both richer and deeper.
Select students from the program will be invited to participate in Motorola’s
internship program. Motorola also will offer a formal pre-college program and
will provide mentors at participating sites. Several Universities have
recognized the program and are offering students (from the class) extra
consideration for admission.
Armada will incorporate the Building Bridges and Futures Program into an
ongoing program of instruction through research at the Academy. Armada’s MA2S
staff will also be investigating the possibility of connecting the Academy’s
PEAK Motus technology to research with Motorola. As a result of a grant from
the Convergence Education Foundation, MA2S is the holder of the
third largest number of PEAK Motus systems in the United States (next to the
Olympic Training Committee and the University of Minnesota).
Motorola has successfully implemented The Building Bridges and Futures Program
in five schools in Chicago. Based on its success, Motorola is expanding the
program to select schools outside of Illinois. MA2S is currently one
of only a few schools outside of Northern Illinois, and the only expansion
school in the Midwest, included in the partnership.
Students interested in the program can enrol by contacting Elsie Ritzenhein,
director of The Macomb Academy of Arts and Sciences.
