New R&D centre provides access to Motorola’s
comprehensive network technologies, drives innovation and develops talent in
China
BEIJING, China – 24 March 2006 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced the
launch of its Hangzhou R&D Centre, the company’s 17th R&D
facility in China. The new R&D centre is designed to provide Chinese
operators with local access to Motorola’s comprehensive network technologies as
well as to develop local talent while driving network innovation and the growth
of China’s wireless communications industry.
The new R&D centre will support both Motorola Networks’ technologies and
products, helping to develop, test and launch software and hardware for final
integration into commercialised product offerings for customers. It will also
provide extensive R&D services for next generation technologies.
“To best meet customer needs and generate high return on investment, China’s
operators not only want 3G technologies; they are looking into the
opportunities created by other networks and services,” said Simon Leung,
regional president, Motorola Asia Pacific. “With the establishment of the new
Hangzhou R&D centre, Motorola is taking another step towards addressing the
specific needs of operators in the China market by developing seamless mobility
strategies that will generate new sources of revenue and differentiate service
offerings.”
Located in the Binjiang District of Hangzhou’s Hi-tech Industry Development
Zone, the Hangzhou R&D Centre plans to increase the number of R&D
engineers by approximately 10% in China with the opening of this centre and
expects to hire more over the following two years.
With the close participation and support from the Hangzhou government,
Motorola’s new global R&D centre will further help transform Hangzhou into
a global telecommunications development and innovation hub. Hangzhou’s
85-square-kilometer development zone has already attracted over 2,500
enterprises, and continues to grow. With its world-leading expertise and
advanced technologies, Motorola’s new R&D centre will help to further drive
talent and innovation in the region and beyond.
“Motorola prides itself on innovation,” said Mark Borota, senior vice president
and general manager of cellular networks for Motorola Networks, present at
today’s opening ceremony. “The Hangzhou R&D Centre enhances China’s
position in Motorola’s global R&D network. By spanning our research centres
across the globe, Motorola is able to work with some of the best scientists and
engineers in the world and develop technology solutions adapted to local
markets. Our commitment to a global research network and locally-driven
innovation has enabled Motorola to take a leadership role in the industry.”
Innovation is at the heart of Motorola. Motorola’s global R&D portfolio of
over US$3 billion is aimed at delivering continued commercial value and shaping
the future of worldwide telecommunications. With over 25,000 engineers and
scientists on the Motorola team, the company has over 21,300 patents, and
counting. The company’s first R&D centre in China was established in 1993;
