New R&D team to research technologies for
next generation low-cost mobile broadband
BEIJING, China – 14 November, 2006 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced
the opening of its Broadband Wireless China Research Centre in Beijing. The centre
will focus on researching key technologies for future broadband wireless
systems and helping develop global standards.
The Broadband Wireless China Research Centre will initially develop key
projects in the area of spectrum, broadband wireless technology development and
standardization, in particular with a focus on next generation low-cost mobile
broadband.
Wireless broadband is one of the most promising technology areas for the next
generation of telecommunication system, which will offer higher data rate,
lower cost, and better spectrum efficiency among many other important features.
“The opening of the centre is a further testament of Motorola’s China strategy:
to develop China as a production and R&D base. Today Motorola has nearly
3000 engineers working in 18 R&D centres in China, the largest R&D
presence any global company has established here,” said Greg Brown, president
of Motorola Networks and Enterprise.
“As China is striving to play an active role in the development and
standardization of next-generation communications, the Wireless Broadband China
Research Centre plans to work with Chinese partners to achieve these goals
together, and at the same time to prepare Motorola for the exciting future
brought by wireless broadband technologies,” Brown said.
The centre will bring deep technical expertise to Motorola business teams in
China and will drive research partnerships with customers and universities in
China. For example, this lab plans to work with the FuTURE Mobile Communication
Forum, an open and international, non-governmental and non-profitable
telecommunication organization. Motorola is a founding member of the FuTURE
forum.
“As a promising technology, wireless broadband is an ideal bridge between
Internet and telecommunications networks. It will open up technology and
business opportunities for Motorola and other companies as well,” said Mr. Ruey
Bin Kao, president of Motorola China. “Wireless broadband is an integral part
of Seamless Mobility. With the establishment of the Broadband Wireless China
Research Centre in Beijing, Motorola is taking a further step toward fully
realizing its vision of Seamless Mobility in China.”
